Services
Advancing Opportunities offers a wide variety of services and supports to individuals with disabilities and their families.
The services and supports provided by Advancing Opportunities help advance the independence of people with disabilities. The impact of these services are felt hundreds of different ways every day. Here are just a few examples:
Teenage girls appreciate their privacy. Recently a member of our assistive technology team created a transfer bench for a young woman with cerebral palsy. The bench allows the young woman to transfer from her wheelchair onto a toilet without assistance. The bench was designed specifically for her, based on the measurements of her bathroom and her wheelchair and was constructed in one of the agency’s mobile workshops right in her driveway.
For 35 years, Tom W. was a resident at the New Lisbon Developmental Center. This August, Tom moved into his own apartment in Woodstown, NJ with a roommate, Ernie. The pair receives residential supports from Advancing Opportunities. There’s no question, Tom prefers living in a home to living in an institution. Tom is happy and exercising control over his life. Deciding what to have for dinner, thinking about what to do on a Saturday afternoon – the independence is exhilarating.
Abby P. wanted to attend college, but as a student with significant learning disabilities, she didn’t think it was an option. Members of our assistive technology team worked with Abby while she was still a student at Haddon Heights High School, showing her the different types of computer devices and software that could help her. She enrolled in Salem County College and finished her freshman year with flying colors. She also took class in glass blowing and discovered a new passion and talent for this unique art form.
